Are Mink Eyelashes Cruelty-free?

In recent years, there has been much debate about mink eyelashes. Mink suppliers put familiar, reassuring labels on their products, such as "ethically sourced", "cruelty-free", etc. Some beauty stores claim that mink lashes can be ethically sourced without causing any harm to the animals. As a result, many mink lashes are advertised as "100 percent cruelty-free" and "humane".

However, several major animal welfare organizations, including PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), tell people that this is not the case. All of these labels have only one purpose: to deceive consumers. Today we take you inside mink lashes and reveal the cruel truth behind them.

What are Mink Lashes?

Mink lashes are made from real mink and help people achieve a "fuller and thicker" look. Mink are small mammals native to North America and Europe and belong to the same family as otters, weasels, and ferrets. For centuries, mink have been highly valued and exploited for their naturally shiny, luxurious fur. People used mink fur to make clothes, shawls, scarves, and more, and mink fur became a symbol of wealth either.

Why do People Suddenly Start Using Mink Eyelashes?

A few years ago, mink eyelashes became popular among false eyelashes in Australia and other countries because mink hair creates light, soft, fluffy, and natural-looking false eyelashes. It was known as the most expensive and best false eyelashes. Today, salons and false eyelash manufacturers around the world offer mink lashes, and they claim that mink lashes are made from hair that has been dropped or brushed off by mink.

The Truth Behind Mink Lashes

Mink are shy, solitary, territorial animals who are afraid of humans and will not get close to them, much less sleep on them, preferring to feed, climb and swim in their vast habitat. They can become aggressive when they feel threatened or confined to a small area.

Investigations have shown that fur farmers confine them to cramped and extremely unsanitary wire cages. These animals often show signs of extreme psychological distress, such as frantic circling and self-mutilation, and suffer from infections, gaping wounds, and other diseases and injuries that are often untreated. And, farms crowded with sick, stressed, and injured mink are "petri dishes" for viruses such as the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which is not only found on mink farms but is also transmitted from mink to humans.

Mink farmers ignore all these and often use the cheapest methods of killing, including gassing, electrocution, and neck-breaking, before skinning the mink.

PETA says, "If you purchase a set of mink lashes, you’re supporting an industry in which animals endure immense fear, stress, disease, and other physical and psychological hardships."

There is no way to say with certainty that all mink farmers abuse their animals, but there is clear evidence that the process is far from humane.

Luckily, many people and countries have realized this situation. PETA and its international affiliates have been speaking out against the mink lash industry, and fur farming has been banned entirely in the U.K. Cosmetics retail giants Sephora and MECCA, as well as lash brand Velour, has announced a ban on mink lashes by 2020. The biggest brands in fashion, such as Gucci, Burberry, and Versace are refusing to mink fur. The potential for fur farms to spread the coronavirus is so great that the Dutch parliament voted to ban mink farming immediately.

Do you still want to risk gluing the fur of these animals to your eyes? That's insane!!!

What Can You Do?

  • Don't buy eyelashes or any other products made from mink fur.
  • Look for alternatives, whether it's false eyelashes, clothing, or etc.
  • Tell your friends who buy mink fur products about the reality of mink fur.
  • Do not support any shopping stores or salons that use mink lashes.
  • Respond to PETA or other animal protection organizations about stores that sell mink products.
